“We Love To Boogie…”
“We Love To Boogie…” Marc Bolan was spot on. Getting your groove on feels great at any age!
I’m a choreographer so I’ve always loved to dance - in clubs, kitchens, front rooms and parties. I’ve danced professionally on stage, in studios and on film sets. The sheer joy of moving to a beat, any beat, is unbeatable!
During lockdown I kept on dancing with friends on Zoom and that’s where the idea for Maggie’s Dance Class began. My mates are not professional dancers, they just wanted to have a giggle, give their bodies a workout and, to their surprise, their brains too. I devised a simple routine and we’d meet up online, once or twice a week. All of us in our own living rooms - with coffee tables pushed back and any breakables moved to one side in case of the odd flailing arm…it was great fun and something to look forward to during those dreary Covid months.
When the world opened up again we met in person and my pals asked if I’d set up a class for non-professional dancers. I liked the idea of setting up a local class and the more I talked about it to friends and neighbours the more enthusiastic we all became. I researched locally and found there was a definite place for a dance class that would offer something different. That’s when I discovered the Woodfield Pavilion…. bingo!
“I love Maggie’s Dance Class - it’s the perfect excuse to strut your stuff on a weekday with like-minded movers and groovers!”
Maggie’s Dance Class kicked off last September. I have managed - most of the time - to run it around rehearsals for other projects. Although there was a short pause last winter when I was working in Truro at the Hall For Cornwall on their Christmas panto, that commute was a stretch too far!
“It’s completely for all levels and definitely for all ages. Maggie is very patient and teaches at the right pace for us all!”
Just like in lockdown I devise a routine, then over several weeks we work on it so that everyone grasps the moves enough to enjoy dancing to whatever music we’ve chosen. (Yes, sometimes you get to choose a track that’s special to you) We’ve had Beyonce, En Vogue, Van Morrison, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, Donna Summer - the list goes on. Connecting the body to the brain is not to be underestimated, as one of my regular attendees Pru says:
“Maggie’s dance classes are not only for those who love dancing and listening to great music but for those who want to test their grey matter too!”
Another classmate Chrissy says:
“There’s a great sense of achievement for all of us at the end of the class and that’s not to mention the physical benefits!”
It’s such a joy to teach this group, there’s such a fun atmosphere and it’s thrilling when a routine starts to take shape. It’s wonderful to see these enthusiastic, savvy dancers from my local community get their groove on. Oh yes, they love to boogie!
“We have a really good laugh at Maggie’s class. It’s more fun & a different kind of workout from yoga or Pilates. I always come away with the music buzzing in my head & a spring in my step” Kate S
Give it a go, we’d love to welcome you.
Maggie’s Dance Class is on Tuesdays 10.50 - 11.50am at the Woodfield Pavilion.
